How long does a size actually last?

A newborn size fits for about six weeks. A 3T fits for the best part of a year. Pick a girl or a boy and how tall they run, and see every size from newborn to twelve side by side.

One tile per size, the child for it standing on top. The light column behind each child, and the number above it, are how many months that size lasts for the median girl; the line across the top is the age it is outgrown. Newborn is gone in about 6 weeks; by 3T a size holds for 10 months.

And it depends on the child. A girl on the 90th percentile for height reaches 3T at 26 months and is out of it 7.6 months later. A girl on the 10th percentile does not get there until 41 months, and then wears it for 11.4 months. The same 3T is worth about 50% more wear on a smaller child.
